LinkedIn vs. Monster
So how are these people going to find their next job?
SiliconBeat says that PeopleSoft employees are flocking to LinkedIn, the social networking service. About 3,700 of the 5,500 accounts created by PeopleSoft employees are new accounts, which Joi Ito says means that about half of PeopleSoft's employees now have resumes in LinkedIn.
Since these 3,700 people don't yet know who will be laid off, they may not want to post their resume at Monster.com and the other job hunter databases. However, many of the resumes in LinkedIn are not job seekers — they are entrepreneurs seeking funding, salespeople looking for leads, consultants looking for clients, and other people doing business networking.
So, if your employer sees your resume in LinkedIn, it's not obvious that you're looking for another job. In addition, ask yourself if you'd rather a potential employer see your resume in LinkedIn or in the monster database at Monster.com.
For job seekers LinkedIn is probably a very efficient way to reach hiring managers at companies — and bypass the HR department.
This is great for job seekers, but it's another story if you're one of those entrepreneurs, salespeople, or consultants looking for business networking opportunities.
Mike Masnick tells why you may not want to use LinkedIn to initiate contacts. For traditional business networking I've found it quicker and more efficient to just pick up the phone and call someone who I've found in LinkedIn. It eliminates having to go through people you don't know. And, it's more private since the reason for your contact isn't divulged to unknown people in the chain.
Now, for three real-world examples of how LinkedIn is being used:
- I met someone at a networking event and instead of him reciting all the ventures he's been involved in, he suggested that I take a look at his LinkedIn resume. Later, when I saw his LinkedIn resume I learned more than I ever could in a brief conversation at a networking event.
- I noticed that a friend's personal Web site has a link to her LinkedIn resume. I learned a few details about her background that I hadn't known.
- I recently spoke to a group of entrepreneurs and mentioned Paul Allen's requirement that his clients have their resume in LinkedIn. He said that after an entrepreneur makes contact with him, he checks their LinkedIn resume and third-party endorsements.
So, while LinkedIn can be good for job seekers making new connections, for most people LinkedIn's greatest value is in sharing your resume after you've made contact with a person.
We've been wondering about the value of LinkedIn. Now we know — it's a great resume database. And, it's free!
